Beyond the Tree. A Journey into the Traditions of Egyptian Woodcraft – Artworks exhibition

This exhibition highlights the trees that have been used in Egypt since ancient times, and the world that surrounds and benefits from them. Whether as a supplier of shade or wood for everyday objects, or as a source of inspiration for the artists we met, there’s a whole world to be found Beyond the tree. The acacia, tamarisk, jujube and sycamore fig trees we came across on our wanderings around Luxor, Fayoum and Cairo are the last witnesses to a heritage that must be protected. Some of the trees presented here are over two hundred years old and form an integral part of a plural Egyptian landscape that has continued to evolve and urbanise. In the face of this galloping urbanisation, where trees are all too often sacrificed, it is crucial to preserve and raise awareness of a unique heritage that Egyptians hold dear and that some of them are trying to preserve from generation to generation.
Using Egyptian trees as a common thread to create a link between yesterday and today, we invite you to follow us on a journey into the traditions of Egyptian woodcraft, in the shade of the trees of the Nile.

The exhibition is organised by G. Eschenbrenner Diemer, director of the Medjehu Project, and the photographer Patricia Mora, author of the photographs on display, together with the artist Mina Milad Ramsis, with his artwork.
